Me: “Remind me again why we’re doing this?” My codriver: “Because we’re dumb.”

See day Zero:

!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!

Day one started off fan-freakin-tastic. We were running several hours late again getting going (hopefully this doesn’t become a theme) after collecting some last-minute necessities. Then I got rear-ended in a Tim’s parking lot, by a guy in a Ram. Not a super huge amount of damage and the bumper wasn’t mint, and I wasn’t in a mood to deal with that, so I told him just to go. So now I need to track down another straight MJ rear bumper, and as anyone who’s done that knows, they aren’t exactly super easy to come by.

The yacht on the right is my friend’s ride, a bitching ‘76 2-door Imapala. It’s not mint, and he picked it up less that a week ago, but it runs alright and performed flawlessly all day, which is more than I can say about the MJ.

The fuel MJ’s troubles came on fast and hard again today. After an hour or so of driving it starts sputtering if I try pushing past 2000rpm or so. No codes or check-engine lights, but no great. On Saskatchewan’s flat highways this is manageable unless I need to pass, but there are mountains ahead of us. In Kindersley, SK, I picked up a fuel pressure gauge, and while pressure was on spec at idle, it dropped pretty low at WOT. 20 psi isn’t enough. No fuel pumps to be had in Kindersley, no surprises there I guess. Fortunately there was one at the Crappy tire in Medicine Hat. The last little bit of the run from our stop at Leader SK was stressful, to say the least. Something about hills and no more than 2000 rpm.

Bug spatter coming towards Medicine Hat. Great country, unless you have a failing fuel pump.

We pressed onwards towards Lethbridge where we ultimately stopped for the night. The purpose of going on was to drain more fuel from my tank for the fuel pump change, but it was a stressful run for sure. Coming into town, I was down to around 1700rpm, 90km/h was my top speed. We stopped for a light and in pretty sure the 0-50km/h pull took most of a minute. .

This morning will see the new fuel pump go in, and a filter and spark plugs. Hopefully this cures it. Probably also an oil change. I’ve gone a total of 1300km on this failing pump now since the symptoms became problematic... Stressful for sure.
